October 2014: A Trick to Avoid the Treats

In the spirit of Halloween, instead of a treat, I want to offer you a trick. I know you are shocked, because in the choice between a trick or a treat, we are usually offered a treat. But for those of us on mission to transform our physique, junk food is not really a treat in our book. Maybe a tub of protein powder or a jar of nut butter would be considered a treat.
So get comfy and get ready to do some mental imagery. Here we go.
Step 1: Think of a food that you don’t like. Now in you minds eye think about several factors regarding this food. As you visualize this food, where is it spatially located? Go ahead and gesture so that you can get a sense of this in your imagination where this food is located. Is it large or small? Is it color or black and white? Is it moving or still? Are there any noises associated with it? Do you get a feeling when you think of that food? Now clear your mental screen.

Step 2: Think of a candy that you really like, but you want to avoid eating. You will do the same process as described in step one. Think about several factors regarding this food in your minds eye. Where is this food spatially located? Go ahead and gesture there now. Is it large or small? Is it color or black and white? Is it moving or still? Are there any noises associated with it? Do you get a feeling when you think of that food?

Step 3: Now while thinking about the candy that you like but prefer not to like, make a large gesture with your hand as if you are physically moving the image in your mind’s eye to the same location as the food you don’t like. Now, get a sense of what that is like. Now change the color and size to match the food you don’t like. Now associate any noises with it like the food you don’t like. Maybe you are saying to yourself ew, or yuck. Get the same feelings as you do with the food you don’t like. Notice now, how that candy has lost its appeal. You may feel a slight sense of loss when you do this. And also don’t worry you can move it back. Although I don’t see much benefit in chomping on candy corn, you may want to leave that option open for some reason.
