April 2014 Newsletter: Mind Games- Going From Disbelief to Belief

How do you go about nurturing your goals? For me, I start with my mind. When I have a dream in my heart, I make it a goal. When I have a desire, I make it a plan. When I have a vision, I make it part of my schedule. I take my mental reality and turn it into physical reality. I clean out the cob webs mentally, and that is the first step in setting up a successful plan of action.

I always love to say, if I had an inner transcript of my thoughts for any one given day, I would know how to make myself even more effective at achieving my goals. The reason is because these thoughts are so subtle that we often don’t even recognize them. When we take our mind from disbelief to belief, for example, we don’t take any consideration regarding how we actually did that. What goes on inside our mind that we are able to have a dream that seems unrealistic and then at some point when we look at that dream in our mind, it is inevitable that it will happen?

What can we do to have even more deliberate sculpting of our minds in order to achieve the goals we have?

MOVING FROM DISBELIEF TO BELIEF

I am going to jump right into the exercise this month, so I hope you are warmed up. Think of a goal that you have that you desire, but you don’t believe it will happen. Take a moment to consider something important that you really have been wanting, and write it down. How do you represent that goal in your mind? Does it have a particular location? Is it a picture? If so, is it black and white, or color? Does it have sound? If so, how is it moving? Does it have a location spatially? Is it off to the left, right in the center, or maybe down and to the right? Is it far away or close? Now think about how it sounds? Are there words that go with it? Are you saying something to yourself? What else is going in your internal experience to represent this goal that you have, but you don’t believe will happen?

Now, think of something that you know will happen for sure. For example, maybe you have signed up for a conference at work, or are going to a party for a friend and you are sure that this will happen. It can even be as simple as the fact that you know you will go to bed this evening. How do you represent this in your mind? Let’s go through the same process. Does it have a particular location? Is it a picture? If so, is it black and white, or color? Does it have sound? If so, how is it moving? Does it have a location spatially? Is it off to the left, right in the center, or maybe down and to the right? Is it far away or close? Now think about how it sounds? Are there words that go with it? Are you saying something to yourself? What else is going in your internal experience to represent this thing that you know for sure will happen?

Now, let’s compare and contrast. Get out a couple of note cards and write down on those cards how you represent each event in your mind. Go back through the list and mark it on the card. Then place each card physically in the location where you think they are represented in your mind. Don’t worry about doing it right, just play with it.

Now, what if you took the thing that you desire, but don’t believe it will happen and make it match the thing that you know will happen? For example, change the location to match the location of the thing you know will happen. Change the words you are saying to yourself, if the image is in black and white, make it color, if it is far away make it close.

Now, just hold in there in the new location with the new colors and sounds and notice what is different about your experience. Does it seem more realistic now to achieve this goal? Has it softened up a bit for you? Do you feel more compelled to move toward it? How has it changed?

You have just experienced the power of manipulating your mind to move you in the direction of your goal. There are so many ways we can play with the thoughts in our head.

Take this month to think more about the thoughts going on in your mind. What thoughts are useful? What thoughts are not? Make some notes. And next month we will talk even more about how to mold your mind in such a way that it moves you in the direction of your goals and in addition to that, allows for an enjoyable experience throughout the process.
